Understanding the emotional values and unforgettable bonds of pet portraits

As you read today’s post, I hope you are cuddled up with your furry friend by your side. Having had many dogs, cats, hamsters, and various other pets, some still with me and some who have crossed the rainbow bridge, I understand the deep bond we share with our animal companions. These connections are incredibly powerful and meaningful.

Preserving Special Connections

Two years ago, the heart-wrenching decision had to be made to put our sweet boxer Lucy down due to her heart condition. After trying medications and treatments for months, it was evident that it was time to let her go. At the vet, I was offered a cast of her paw print, but in the emotional state of the moment, I declined. The thought of going home without her and a stone impression of her paw was just too much.

A Tribute to Unconditional Love

As time passed and the pain of her loss was a little more bearable, I was scrolling through the many, many pictures of Lucy on my cellphone. At that moment, it hit me! I had never taken the time to paint our sweet girl. Now, remembering her is colored by grief, and it seems impossible to capture her happy spirit as she was. I regret that a portrait had been painted while she was still with me.

Memories That Last a Lifetime

While a portrait wouldn't replace Lucy, it would have helped ease the overwhelming grief her absence caused in my home. It would have served as a special way to keep her memory alive, a lasting tribute to honor her. Seeing her portrait each day might have provided comfort and brought smiles, especially during the hardest moments of missing her.

I am embarrassed to confess this

Lucy had a red collar she always wore, which even smelled like her. To preserve her scent and memory, I placed it in a plastic bag. But, over time, the smell faded away. Seeing the collar became a painful reminder of our last day at the vet and was too much to bear. Eventually, with a heavy heart and a sense of guilt, I had to throw it away.

Creating Cherished Memories Through Art

While keepsakes like Lucy's collar hold deep emotional value, they can sometimes become too painful to keep. Pet portraits, on the other hand, offer a lasting and comforting way to remember our furry friends. They capture the essence of our pets and the special moments we've shared with them, providing a beautiful and meaningful keepsake. Reflecting on these cherished memories through a portrait can highlight the profound impact our pets have on our lives.

Fito’s Portrait

This old dog did learn new tricks - I took the time to paint my studio muse Fito.
